A new scam has come up, a variation on previous tracking scam but with a very nasty twist.
It starts with a text coming from various phone numbers (its switching as they are blocked at the start) to install a new tracking app to track a package you are to receive in the post, currently the main target name is Royal Mail in the UK but American/USA varients are likely to spring up.
On Android Phones (Samsung, OnePlus being examples) it will infect the operating system of the phone and begin doing its scamming.
The current variation uses your own phone number to continue to send messages in your contacts list. This is what makes this paticular scam so horrible. The scam involves using your phone number to send to other people, making it very difficult to stop sending.
Should you get a message from a friend saying to download a tracking app, TELL THEM IMMEDIATELY!
Next, the fake tracking app begins listing in the background. It will copy what you are typing and take screen captures, if you have a banking app it may also try to track what infomation you are entering in order to hack you bank and steal your bank details for (likely) resale on the black market/dark web.
If you have been infected with a fake tracking app, the best course of action is to factory reset the phone. Make sure to take backup's of pictures of anything else you have that you wish to keep. But reseting the phone is the safest way to stop any further damage.
